about

"Glass" is Robin's second composition for gamelan gong kebyar. The title of the piece comes from the first movement, which plays with the paired tuning system of the instruments to either support or subvert the ombak (the pulsing which gives gamelan its characteristic shimmer), effectively moving the piece in and out of focus as a lens shifts vision. Much of the material in "Glass" is derived from a simple three note pattern, providing a musical thread which develops, even as the piece introduces and later magnifies peripheral themes.
